Mandalorian wedding

The Galaxy Far Far Away has so many communities with different cultures. Since the subject of Jedis and marriages is complicated, fans can’t help but wonder how the other communities in the Star Wars Universe view weddings. Among the said communities is the Mandalorian community.

Mandalorians can marry without problems. The couple privately exchanges vows, and then they feast with their families and friends.

Below is more information about Mandalorian weddings.

Do Mandalorians marry?

Yes, Mandalorians can marry, and in fact, they cherish family and shower affection upon those they love and care for. And in Mandalorian society, weddings typically happen immediately after a Mandalorian turns sixteen years old. They even have their own way of doing weddings.

Marriages in Mandalorian society are expected to be lifelong.

Can Mandalorians marry anyone?

Yes, at least according to the Republic Commando novels in Legends. Mandalorians’ weddings are simple, and they can marry anyone. If they marry a non-Mandalorian, their spouse can take up the Mandalorian culture, effectively making themselves Mandalorians.

The novels have a few examples of this happening. Some Clones have married Mandalorians, and so they became Mandalorians too. One Mandalorian also married a lady from Coruscant, and another married a Jedi.

How do Mandalorian Weddings go?

Mandalorian weddings are very simple – a lot simpler than weddings here on Earth.

The couple attends a private ceremony where they enter into a legal commitment by reciting a pledge.

They recite the pledge: “Mhi solus tome, mhi solus dar’tome, mhi me’dinui an, mhi ba’juri verde.” That translates to “We are one when together, we are one when parted, we share all, we will raise warriors.”

They can exchange these vows in person, via text communication, or over a comlink from anywhere across the Galaxy.

The wedding ceremony is private. But it does not mean Mandalorians should keep their relationship secret. After the wedding, family and friends gather and feast to celebrate the couple’s union.

Is same-sex marriage allowed in the Mandalorian society?

Yes, same-sex marriage is accepted in Mandalorian society. The human male Mandalorian, contract killer and bounty hunter Goram Beviin shows this.

At some point in his life, he met the blacksmith Medrit Vasur, who is also a male. The two of them married and lived on the Beviin-Vasur farm near the Mandalorian city of Keldabe. Since they are fully integrated into Mandalorian society, it implies that Mandalorians see nothing wrong with that.

Can Mandalorians divorce their partners?

Yes, but only under specific conditions.

Suppose a Mandalorian acted unfaithfully during a long separation, and that resulted in a child. The Mandalorian will be forgiven if they agree that the married couple would raise the child that resulted from the indiscretion. In this case, a divorce is not needed.

But in other cases, like when a partner has neglected their responsibilities or failed to live up to them, the partners can divorce each other. That can be done with a declaration that they were shuk’la riduurok. That is Mandalorian for “a broken love.”

Can Mandalorians show take their helmets during weddings?

This is one of the most common questions that pop up when talking about Mandalorians and weddings. Do they take their helmets off during weddings to kiss? Likewise, do they take it off when making love?

Mandalorians’ strictness to their creed is one of the most important themes in Star Wars. Specifically, they are not allowed to take their helmets off to show their faces to any living thing.

But, we have seen some Mandalorians in the past, and in the show – The Mandalorian remove their helmets. That raises confusion. Why is that?

Bo-Katan Kryze clarified the issue in season 2 of The Mandalorian. There are different groups of Mandalorians. And like on Earth, different groups and communities have different rules, depending on cultural and religious beliefs.

The Mandalorians that keep their faces hidden are only a minority religious group that belongs to the Children of the Watch. They are the only Mandalorians that follow this rule.

That said, some Mandalorians can remove their helmets during the wedding while others can’t.

Where are Mandalorian Weddings held?

As stated above, Mandalorian weddings are attended by only the involved couple. The Mandalorian Wedding of Ghes Orade and Mirta Gev was held in Keldabe on Mandalore. But it is not required to be held there.

The couple can exchange vows in person, via written text, or through comlink from anywhere in the Galaxy. That means they can do weddings anywhere, and even when the couple is not in the same place. As long as the message reaches the other person, it is counted as a legitimate marriage.

But after making their vows, they traditionally go to an agreed place where they hold a feast. There, they meet with their families and friends. Since Mandalorians have their families in Mandalore, it is highly likely that the celebration will be held on that planet.
