It is common for heroes to own a scar or two, the same can be said with the Hidden Leaf Village champion, Uzumaki Naruto. But in Naruto’s case, he earned his scars not only from his past battles but from other curious reasons as well.
What appeared to be whisker-like scars in Naruto’s cheeks were not actual scars, but marks influenced by the Bijuu’s (Nine Tailed Fox Beast) presence receding together with him inside his mother’s womb.
Does Naruto have any scars?
With every battle won and lost, of course, it’s already anticipated for Naruto to be injured and scarred after the battle. Those bandage wraps were surely not for display only. Even so, one “scar” struck the viewers’ interest; they were the marks that are located on Naruto’s cheeks.
What are Naruto’s scars?
It was already mentioned that the marks on Naruto’s cheeks are not literally scars, but an effect of being exposed to the Nine-Tailed Fox’s presence when he was still in Kushina Uzumaki’s womb, hence the marks resemblance to a fox’s whiskers.
The marks only appeared on Naruto’s cheeks because of the fact that his mother, Kushina was a Jinchuriki of the Nine Tailed Fox Beast. Jinchuriki (Power of Sacrifice if translated in Japanese) are people who have tailed beasts sealed inside them. Whisker marks appear if a child was born to a Jinchuriki.
As Kushina was the current Jinchuriki of the Nine Tailed Beast when she was pregnant with Naruto, Naruto was exposed to the beast’s power while inside her womb. This is why Naruto only had the marks while Kushina doesn’t have them.
Naruto being exposed to the chakra straight hand, inherited this specific physical trait from the Nine Tailed Fox itself.
After birth, Naruto’s appearance was far from what a normal baby should look like. What should be smooth and unblemished, were cheeks each decorated by three horizontal marks, making his appearance fox-like.
What episode does Naruto get his scars?
There are no actual scenes in the anime showing the precise moment of Naruto getting the whisker marks, however episodes 247 – 249 of Naruto Shippuden revealed how Naruto gained his “scars”.
For the most part, the scenes in episode 247-249 took place before and after the birth of Naruto Uzumaki. It narrates the tale of the deceased parents of Naruto, Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki, how they fell in love and later on formed their own family.
As the story progresses, conflicts arose. Just after the infant Naruto was born, an enemy who wanted to steal the Kyuubi and used it to destroy the village, brutally attacked them, killing Biwako Sarutobi, midwife and wife of the Third Hokage in the process.
Unfortunately, Minato and Kushina didn’t make it.
They save Konoha and their son from those unfateful events by sacrificing their very own lives.
Their appearance in the future even though already dead was made possible by the technique (Eight Trigrams Sealing Style) done by her husband, Minato Namikaze.
This episode established the story of how Naruto became the current vessel of the Nine Tails. Thus supporting the fact that Naruto received the marks from the Bijuu, Kurama.
Did Naruto lose his scars?
Naruto didn’t lose his scars/whisker marks. In the Boruto: Next Generations’ manga series, after losing Kurama, Naruto’s face was seen to be missing all of his whisker marks in one panel, but on the other one he had them.
This panel became a hot topic on different forums. Many fans, still emotional from Kurama’s death, formulate the theory that the marks were gone because of the extraction of the Nine Tails from Naruto. Kurama, now gone from Naruto’s body, the traits that were influenced by the legendary Bijuu were also removed.
Many also pointed out that only one panel contains the whisker free face of Naruto, debating that this could be a mistake done by the artist. Well, it is possible considering that the manga is highly demanded by the readers, pressure and exhaustion of the artist will make mistakes inevitable.
Well for me, I just can’t believe those three lines would mess up a whole fandom!
Will Kurama come back to life?
In the latest episode of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime series, Naruto loses Kurama. Will he come back? No one knows but Masashi Kishimoto, the manga artist of Naruto. But everything seems dire and the chances of Kurama reviving are low.
The epic battle between Naruto and Isshiki Otsutsuki in Episode 217 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations was the beginning of the end of Kurama. In this epic battle, Naruto and Sasuke fruitlessly fought Isshiki Otsutsuki, which later on drives Kurama to think that Baryon Mode would be their last chance to turn the tide of the battle in their favor.
Baryon Mode is a technique in which the user and the tailed beast residing in his body join both of their chakras to create a new type of energy. This energy is immensely powerful, deteriorating the life force of both the user and whoever opponent this attack lunges on.
It was contested if Kurama would come back to life, but the episode showed that Kurama’s chakra (life force) slowly perished until gone during the Baryon Mode, killing Kurama in the process.
It was surely a devastating day for our main protagonist, Naruto. This heroic deed showed how Kurama deeply cared for Naruto. You will surely be missed, Kurama!
